Women’s Psychiatric Asylum Series

Story

I was inspiredto make these drawings when I discovered an in-exhaustive list on-line, attributed to West Virginia's Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, of nearly 100 reasons women could be committed between 1864-1889. The list included masturbation, time of life, jealousy, laziness, novel reading, bad whisky, amongst others. It struck a chord with me as I spend my days making tiny marks for no one in particular. I felt a deep kindred spirit with these women. And I even wonder how much things have changed. So I began drawing, making odes, healing for each reason, each woman, using a drawing technique, a ritual, that I feel critiques and assuages the principle of the incarceration.
